Biosciences and geopolitics: Addressing (in)compatibilities and the new rules of the global landscape
Biosciences and geopolitics: Addressing (in)compatibilities and the new rules of the global landscape
By connecting global politics with the strategic evolution of biotechnology and health innovation, this seminar aims to illuminate the emerging “rules of the game” that will define the future of science, technology, and global health. We will explore how the new geopolitical realities are shaping the rules of international collaboration in the biosciences and discuss the growing impact of:
- Tariffs and evolving international trade policies
- Stricter national regulations supporting domestic production
- Mobility restrictions on highly skilled personnel
- Research security and data governance
- The upcoming “second patent cliff” — the massive expiry of global patents
Together, these forces are reshaping scientific policy, innovation strategies, and the competitive dynamics of the life sciences industry. In addition, the session will also examine how Artificial Intelligence deepens this transformation, as issues of AI infrastructure and genomic data transfers become central to geopolitical competition.
