SUMMARY:Biosciences and geopolitics: Addressing (in)compatibilities and the new rules of the global landscape
DESCRIPTION:By connecting global politics with the strategic evolution of biotechnology and health innovation\, this seminar aims to illuminate the emerging “rules of the game” that will define the future of science\, technology\, and global health. We will explore how the new geopolitical realities are shaping the rules of international collaboration in the biosciences and discuss the growing impact of: \n\nTariffs and evolving international trade policies\nStricter national regulations supporting domestic production\nMobility restrictions on highly skilled personnel\nResearch security and data governance\nThe upcoming “second patent cliff” — the massive expiry of global patents\n\nTogether\, these forces are reshaping scientific policy\, innovation strategies\, and the competitive dynamics of the life sciences industry. In addition\, the session will also examine how Artificial Intelligence deepens this transformation\, as issues of AI infrastructure and genomic data transfers become central to geopolitical competition. \n Nikos Karampekios is the Head of Defence Innovation Department\, National Documentation Centre (EKT). Nikos has published\, among others\, in: Quantitative Science Studies\, SN Social Sciences\, International Migration\, Population\, Space and Place\, Science and Public Policy\, Journal of Scientometrics\, Collection and Curation\, Journal of Knowledge Economy\, Defence and Peace Economics\, Science and Diplomacy\, Science Diplomacy Review. His latest book (in Greek) is ‘Geopolitics of Technology. Science and Technology Policy in the 21st century’.
