ABOUT

ABOUT

DxHub, a Center of Excellence under a European initiative, fosters innovation by linking academia, businesses, government, and society. It aims to transform advanced One-Health research into real-world, market-ready solutions

WHY DxHUB

Infectious diseases pose a major public health threat and rapid diagnosis is crucial for controlling their spread. However, centralised labs often face delays, making timely results difficult to achieve, especially in rural and remote areas. This gap affects human and animal health, as well as food safety, highlighting the need for efficient point-of-care (POC) solutions.

The EU-funded HORIZON WIDERA DxHub project seeks to overcome this challenge by building an Excellence Hub for rapid, accurate, on-site disease diagnosis. Innovative solutions will be developed using cutting-edge technologies and embracing a One Health approach across human, veterinary, and agri-food sectors. By linking academia, businesses, local communities, and government authorities, the so-called Quadruple Helix, DxHub will connect Crete, Greece, and Oeiras, Portugal, fostering research, innovation, and investment to transform diagnostics and improve health outcomes.

OBJECTIVES

Innovation in Diagnostics

Advance cutting-edge diagnostic solutions into breakthrough @ POC products, applicable to One Health, in line with the common strategic priorities.

Strengthening Ecosystems

Unlock complementary innovation capacities in One Health diagnostics, present in the Greek and Portuguese ecosystems and foster a strong alliance among the Quadruple Helix partners.

Economic & Social Growth

Ensure sustainability of state-of-the-art viable products by implementing a joint investment plan, while also investing in the training of all participants within and between the two regions, leading to the nurture of the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs.

Public Awareness

Engage with local communities to highlight the need for POC diagnostic and surveillance solutions for early pathogen detection and counteraction, for disease prevention.

OUR ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE

The management structure of DxHub is designed to ensure efficient decision making, communication and implementation. The project organisational structure includes the following committees:

Steering Committee (ST)
Executive Board (ExB)
Innovation Team (InnovT)
Tech to Market Team (T2M)
Citizen Engagement Team

Composed of the Principal Coordinator, Prof. Electra Gizeli, the Co-coordinator, Dr Pedro Pedrosa, and assisted by the Head of DxHub management team, Dr Angie Kolokousi. It is responsible for guaranteeing that the project is running according to plan and that the project objectives, deliverables and milestones are achieved in a timely and efficient manner and there is effective communication between partners and with the EC.

Apart of the principal coordinator and the co-coordinator the ExB includes all WP Leaders as well as representatives from all partners that are not WP Leaders. It coordinates decision-making, offers technical and administrative assistance, defines the project guidelines and ensures that the deliverables and milestones are achieved.

The main task of this team is assistance of innovation to reach the market by developing innovation strategy, providing information on different commercialization routes, assisting in IP protection process, performing market analysis and business plan, developing marketing and financing strategy and assisting with European legislation, standardisation and certification issues.

The tasks of this team include the selection of R&I pilot and mature projects to enter the acceleration phase and the continuous collaboration with researchers, policy makers and end-users to promote identified current and future needs to high TRL products / solutions. In addition the team will consult on IP, promote spin off formation, and monitor the certification, validation, regulatory demonstration steps for TRL≥5 products.

The team will organize and execute citizen engagement activities, such as Citizen Assemblies and public events to assess and establish knowledge about infectious disease and the importance of early and accurate diagnosis. In addition will organize Citizen Science projects and oversee the creation of Future Space.

WORK PACKAGES

WP1

WP1 will address the broadly identified need for capacity-building in less mature ecosystems. It will equip partners with skills in technology transfer, commercialisation, entrepreneurship, diagnostics research know-how, and regulatory affairs through workshops, business training, masterclasses and a mentoring scheme. A job rotation scheme will foster collaboration by seconding staff to various sector partners.

WP2

WP2 will create the DxHub Innovation Team and implement an accelerator program for research-led innovations to build a pipeline of projects. Additionally, it will define the structure of the Challenge-driven Innovation program that will apply a reverse translational approach, developing solutions for infectious disease detection based on needs identified by the Quadruple Helix partners.

WP3

WP3 will ensure the long-term sustainability of the Excellence Hub beyond Horizon Europe funding. It will engage various financing mechanisms, including structural support from local governments, ad-hoc acquisition of grants and incentives, contributions from stakeholders, revenues from contract research and commercialisation.

WP4

WP4 will drive innovation through the collaboration of the Quadruple Helix partners. It will assess diagnostic tools, identify skill gaps, and promote the co-creation of new solutions. Dissemination efforts will increase awareness and adoption of DxHub activities, discoveries, and products.

WP5

WP5 will develop a portfolio of innovative projects providing diagnostic solutions within One Health perspective. Projects at various stages will be selected following WP3’s investment plan and translated into market-ready solutions with commercial and societal impact.

WP6

WP6 will establish an effective project governance, internal communication, and meeting structure to facilitate cooperation and sharing of information, to fulfill administrative tasks, and to develop a sustainability strategy for continuity beyond the project’s lifetime.
