Greece launches center for infectious disease detection

A groundbreaking Center of Excellence for Innovative Infectious Disease Diagnostics (DxHub) will open on January 1, at the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) for the benefit of public health and pandemic readiness across Europe.

DxHub, led by Greece’s Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB-FORTH) and Portugal’s NOVA University Lisbon, has secured €4.7 million in competitive EU funding.

“DxHub aims to pioneer advanced diagnostic tools, foster business opportunities, and enhance regional competitiveness and sustainability,” said Dr Electra Gizeli, deputy director of IMBB-FORTH and biology professor at the University of Crete. She highlighted the critical need for rapid, precise diagnostics in controlling emerging diseases amplified by climate change, urbanization and mobility.

DxHub will develop cutting-edge molecular diagnostic technologies to detect infections directly at their source, avoiding sample transfers to labs. Collaboration with Crete’s regional authorities, healthcare providers, and private sector ensures impactful innovation.
